Here We Stay — Our Choice "Oral History of Canadian Chinese Immigrants"
※ 155 People, 155th Anniversary
To celebrate the 155th anniversary of the founding of Canada, this project will showcase the oral history of 155 Chinese immigrants. Honoring Canada’s diverse, multicultural heritage, the “Oral History of Canadian Chinese Immigrants” will highlight the lived experience and contributions of overseas Chinese who have chosen to call Canada home.
※ One Method
Oral History: A historical method that “collects spoken memories and personal commentaries of historical significance through recorded interviews.”①
As demonstrated in the Records of the Grand Historian of China, history is made up of overlapping individual narratives. This project will gather many unique stories that together form an important part of Canada’s history. By recording these recollections, we hope to transmit this knowledge to a wider audience.
※ Two Bridges
Chinese Immigrants Oral History Preservation Organization (CIOHPO)② hopes to build two bridges through this project: the first bridge between mainstream Canadian society and the Chinese-Canadian community, and the second between Chinese-Canadian society and overseas Chinese. By sharing the experiences of Chinese immigrants, we hope to highlight their contributions to Canadian culture. Secondly, we hope to give the international community a better understanding of the living conditions of Chinese immigrants in Canada and to outline the reasons why they chose to emigrate.③
※ Three Forms
The culmination of the "Oral History Project for Chinese Immigrants" will be disseminated globally in three formats: textual, visual, and film.
※ Five Regions
Prince Edward Island, the birthplace of Confederation, is the starting point for the project. The completed oral history will be launched in five regions across Canada: Atlantic, Quebec, Greater Toronto, the Prairie Provinces, and Greater Vancouver.
※ Six Principles
This project follows the principles of oral history: No Bias, No Judgement, No Class Origin, No Status, No Religion, and No Success or Failure to select a wide representation of Chinese immigrants to participate in the interviews.
※ 30 Participants Per Region
Select 30 participants from each region to talk about why they chose to emigrate, their journey to Canada, and how they feel about their lives.④
